Official GGSIPU Students' Council

University has released a notification on its website stating that they have constituted a Students' Council of GGSIPU for the Academic session 2009-2010. They also released the list of students who would be part of this council. What surprises me after looking at this announcement, is that all the students in the list are final year toppers based on their CPI of previous semester. Besides there are also some students in the list referred by the Director, Students’ welfare.

I don't understand why only students from the final year were selected and that too all the toppers? Ideally in a council there should be a mix of students from each semester and definitely not all the toppers. Councils like these need people who are willing to work for others and volunteer in various activities of the council. It could be a topper or an average student, besides there should be other criteria for selecting these students. I don't know what procedure university followed for the selection. Ideally there should be a process where University first calls for a nomination of students and that should be open to all. This nomination could be a form where interested students can fill their basic information, state why they want to join the council and mention any previous experience that they may have in similar areas. Then those nominations should be screened, scrutinized and short listed students should be called for an interview, GD etc. A topper who might be excellent in studies but may not be good in extra curriculum activities, whereas a student who is not-so-good-at-studies but active in other activities like sports, event management, debates etc may be a perfect choice for the council. The selection of students merely on the basis on CPI is not fair.

If you have answers to any one of these questions or wants to add more questions to the list then you are encouraged to let us know by posting your comments. Answers to these questions will immensely help all the students of IP University. It is really nice to have a Students' Welfare or a Council but if it is not used by anyone then it is useless.

Now I really have to find out what is their scope of work and how they help students. I seriously feel that bodies like these should be promoted aggressively in all the affiliate colleges. I sincerely hope that they work actively and solve the issues faced by students.
