Heritage Bicycle Ride in Delhi on Sun, Jan31

Last Sunday on 31st Jan a “Heritage Ride” to visit and explore Shahjahanabad (walled city) of Delhi was organised by Delhi Cycling Club with support from NGOs ITDP and INTACH Delhi Chapter. The Heritage Ride was flagged off by Hon’ble Mayor of Delhi Dr. Kanwar Sain who himself is a cycling supporter.

The 10-km bicycle tour started from Pragati Maidan Metro Station at 09.30 AM and passed through ITO, Delhi Gate, Netaji Subhash Marg, Chandni Chowk and back to Pragati Maidan by 11.30 AM while covering enroute several monuments and buildings of historical significance in old Delhi. People from all walks of life participated in this heritage ride.

The key OBJECTIVES of the event was:

1. Promote Cycling as environmentally-friendly and healthy way of commuting specially for short distance trips; and

2. Spread awareness & bring pride amongst people about the rich heritage, monuments, architecture, culture and history of Delhi.

Key monuments and building covered in the ride are:

1) Dilli Gate
2) Jain Temple
3) Gauri Shankar Temple
4) Imperial Bank Building (now SBI bldg.)
5) Begum Samru ki Haveli
6) St. James Church
7) Shishganj Gurudwara
8) Fatehpuri Mosque
9) Town Hall
10) Kashmiri Gate
11) St. Stephens Church
12) Red Fort
13) Jama Masjid
14) Firozshah Kotla Fort

The registration was free and the event was open to cycling enthusiasts and people who are interested in knowing the history and heritage of Delhi.
